thank you all. the series are based on dreams (aren’t you glad you aren’t my analyst) and the carved wooden masks of many cultures around the world. they represent the unseen, unspoken forces that balance the dark aspects of human existence. (myth, legend and anthropological texts abound with descriptions of those that balance the light.) the comparatively stark composition reflects both museum display practices and a personal effort to isolate “the mask” from the darkness. look close, and you’ll see my attempt to represent the creatures that inhabit each mask.

The series has a touching resemblance to some of the very old wood carvings of our ancestors, here in Aotearoa, only full of colour. Kia ora rawa atu.

  3. My guess is that the Masks represent the multifaceted realities of our daily lives, the characters/archetypes we play, as a way to protect ourselves from evil or to relate to each other, somehow. In a matter of speaking, perhaps it’s her own version of Dante?s Divine Comedy. LCA
